Equator Chocolate was founded in 2018 by Barbara and Gustav Gonget, a Ugandan/Danish couple. The company is a pioneering and leading chocolate maker in the region, adding value to the Ugandan cocoa value chain by crafting award-winning chocolate of the highest quality at accessible prices.

We do this with a high degree of social responsibility as an equal opportunities employer and ensuring our farmers are well taken care of. We pay up to 50% more for our traceable and organically grown specialty cocoa in direct trade with the farmers than the usual farm gate price. This approach allows us to obtain perfectly fermented cocoa beans while ensuring our farmers have a decent income. Notably, we do not tolerate child slave labour in our value chain and we are recognised as an ethical chocolate maker on the website Slave Free Chocolate.

Our exceptional chocolate is the result of the high quality of the cocoa we use coupled with our delicate and meticulous processing methods. We are honoured to have been awarded medals for our dark chocolates at the AVPA Chocolate Awards in Paris in 2023 and 2024. Moreover, we were finalists in two categories at the International Chocolate Awards (Europe, Middle East & Africa) in May 2024, being the sole finalist from Africa.

We are proud to be working with INUA Capital, a leading Ugandan impact investment firm who has, among other things, boosted our production capacity. We are also in partnership with RAFIKI, a Danish social enterprise that imports a substantial amount of our chocolate and funnels their profits back into Uganda to assist refugees via DanChurchAid.
